What is Pollen?

Pollen is a fine, powdery substance produced by plants, consisting of microscopic grains containing male gametes (reproductive cells). These grains are carried by the wind or other agents to pollinate female parts of plants, allowing for the fertilization and production of seeds. Pollen is a common cause of allergies in humans and animals, as it can cause symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and watery eyes.

It may be healing for your liver

A 2016 study published in the Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences found that bee products, including bee pollen, helped rats heal from liver damage. Researchers think that this is linked to the antioxidant properties of bee pollen. A 2013 study, also performed on rats, found that bee pollen helped protect liver cells from oxidative stress and promoted cell healing.

Bee pollen may also help heal burns

A 2016 study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine studied the healing of burn wounds on two pigs. Researchers found that topical application of bee pollen sped up healing time when compared to untreated wounds, wounds treated with a salt solution, and wounds treated with silver sulfadiazine (a common burn wound disinfectant). Study authors believe bee pollen could be available in burn therapy, and have called for further research in this area.

It may have anti-cancer properties

According to research published in Phytotherapy Research in 2007, bee pollen extract might cause prostate cancer cells to die. The research was conducted on isolated cells in test tubes rather than on humans or live animals, meaning that considerable further research is needed to see if bee pollen could help treat cancer.

It can help lower your cholesterol

Animal studies suggest that bee pollen extract might help lower LDL cholesterol levels (a.k.a., the “bad” cholesterol). A 2017 study in Nutrients observed mice that were fed a high-fat diet to induce atherosclerosis (the buildup of fatty material on artery walls). Mice that were also given bee pollen extract were less likely to have atherosclerosis, and had much healthier cholesterol levels.

Advantages of Pollen

It's packed with nutrients.
Bee pollen is an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and enzymes, according to the University of Rochester Medical Center. Though the exact nutritional makeup of bee pollen depends on which plant the pollen was taken from. The samples also contained substantial phenolic compounds, including flavonoids might be linked to vascular health, blood sugar control, and other health benefits.

It may help alleviate allergies.
Many people use bee pollen to treat seasonal allergies, so most allergy-related claims stem from research performed on rodents. For a 2008 study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, researchers gave bee pollen phenolic extract (BPPE) to mice and rats with ovalbumin-induced allergies. Data showed that BPPE reduced the production of IgG1 and IgE antibodies, both associated with allergic reactions, and helped protect the rodents against anaphylactic shock.

It has anti-inflammatory properties.
Bee pollen is rich in flavonoids and phenolic acids, which are antioxidant compounds that inhibit the action of inflammatory enzymes in your body. A study published in the International Journal of Advanced Research in 2015 found that bee pollen improved inflammation in albino rats with prostatitis (a swelling of the prostate gland).

Types of Pollen

No Additive Granular Bee Pollen
Organic bee pollen granules originates from nature. It is a pollen grain collected by bees from the stamens of flowering plants (nectar and pollen-derived plants) and added with special glandular secretions (nectar and saliva) to form an irregular Oblate.

Pure Particle Bee Pollen
Bee pollen is nutritionally rich, claims that it enhances everyday and athletic performance have not been reliably verified. It has been traditionally used for a variety of purposes, including relief of constipation; treatment of prostatic conditions, such as prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and prostate cancer;wound healing; and for its proposed antioxidant action.

Natural Organic Bee Pollen Powder

Bee Pollen refers to the pollen that the bees take when the honey is brought back, after the honeycomb through the storage and fermentation after the formation of pollen. Bee pollen is a male germ cell in a stamen of a flower plant. It not only carries the genetic information of life, but also contains all the necessary nutrients to nurture the new life.

Honey Bee Pollen

Honey Bee Pollen is the male part of the plant that must be joined with the female element for reproduction. Every small speck of pollen has all the ingredients to reproduce life. That means it has all the vitamins, minerals, enzymes, coenzymes, amino acids (protein), carbohydrates, male hormones and trace elements. It is a power house of living energy.

Bee Pollen Without Impurity

Bee pollen is the male seed of flowers. It is required for the fertilization of the plant. Every variety of flowers in the universe puts forth a dusting of pollen. Many orchard fruits and agricultural food crops do, too. Bee pollen is the food of the young bee and it is approximately 40% protein. Bee Pollen contains 185 known nutritional ingredients. Bee Pollen contains all of the nutrients needed to sustain life.

Chemical Composition of Pollen

Pollen is quite a varied plant product rich in biologically active substances. 200 substances were found in the pollen grains from different plant species. In the group of basic chemical substances, there are proteins, amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids and fatty acids, phenolic compounds, enzymes, and coenzymes as well as vitamins and bioelements.

Pollen contains 22,7% of protein on average, including 10,4% of essential amino acids such as methionine, lysine, threonine, histidine, leucine, isoleucine, valine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan. These protein elements are life essential and the organism cannot synthesize them by itself. Moreover, in the pollen, there are significant amounts of nucleic acids, especially ribonucleic one. Digestible carbohydrates occur in the pollen in the amount of 30,8% on average. Reducing sugars, mainly fructose and glucose, are present in this product in about 25,7%.

Among lipids, which are present in the pollen in the amount of about 5,1%, the ones which should be mentioned in the first place are essential fatty acids (EFAs). Acids such as linoleic, γ-linoleic and archaic exist in the amount of 0,4%. Phospholipids amount to 1,5%, while phytosterols, especially P-sitosterol, are present in the amount of 1,1% .

Another group constituted phenolic compounds which amount to 1,6% on average. This group includes flavonoids, leukotrienes, catechins, and phenolic acids. Among flavonoids occurring in the pollen in 1,4%, there are mainly kaempferol, quercetin, and isorhamnetin, while in the group of phenolic acids, 0,2%, there is mainly chlorogenic acid.

Is Bee Pollen Nutritious?

Bee pollen contains many nutrients. Over 200 substances are found in the pollen grains from different plant species. The amount of certain nutrients can vary, depending on the plant species from which the bees collected the pollen. All three major nutrients (carbohydrates, protein and fat) and a wide variety of additional nutrients are found in bee pollen. Some of the nutrients include:

Vitamins B1, B2 and B6, which all help your body turn food into energy

Copper, which is needed for many processes in the body

Flavonoids, compounds called antioxidants, which may decrease your risk for chronic diseases

When to Take Bee Pollen?

One of the most common questions I get asked is when to take bee pollen granules. Bee pollen is first and foremost a food and it should be looked upon as that. It is not a drug so the concerns I hear about taking it with supplements or medications are mostly unfounded. Bee pollen can be eaten or consumed literally at any time of the day or night. Be careful however as some find it gives them a jolt of energy (likely due to the high b vitamin content).

Bee pollen can be mixed in literally anything. I mix it in cereal, granola, yogurt and even apple sauce. My favorite way to ingest bee pollen is to blend it into my morning protein smoothie with fruit, a greens drink and my Essential Fatty Acid blend.

Some people prefer to simply chew their bee pollen and swallow. While at first it has a rather different taste for most, it really does grow on you and is quite palatable. In my opinion, this is the best way to ingest your pollen as your digestive system has a chance to really start breaking down the outer pollen shell and releasing the valuable nutrients inside.

Ultimately, it is up to you how you consume your pollen. It is extremely versatile and can be chewed, blended, mixed or simply swallowed. The most important thing is to make it a part of your daily nutrition so find out what works best for you and stick to it!

How Do I Take Bee Pollen Safely?

Everybody knows that bees are essential to our crop production and the overall sustainability of our ecosystem. Bees are pollinators and are responsible for cross-pollination, which helps at least 30% of crops and 90% of wild plants thrive. And while many people think of raw organic honey as bees' only edible byproduct, organic bee pollen is now growing in popularity due to its possible effects. But to use organic bee pollen powder safely, it's important to take some precautions. Here's part one of our beginner's guide to using bee pollen safely and effectively.

First Time Use
Before taking bee pollen it's important to talk with your doctor. If you're taking bee pollen for the very first time, it's important to 'test the waters' and make sure you don't have any sort of sensitivities to the substance. This means that you should start with a very small amount and then gradually increase your intake. Bee pollen is by no means considered a drug, but as with many new substances, it's best to start slow in the rare event that you have some sort of intolerance or allergy.

How to Ingest
To be safe, first time users should place one granule's worth of bee pollen powder under their tongue. Let it dissolve entirely and become absorbed into the mucous membrane and into your bloodstream. Wait a few minutes and see if you experience any sort of reaction. If you don't feel any adverse effects, this means it's generally safe to up your intake the following day and take two granule's worth of the substance.

Ongoing Use
You should keep in mind that just because you don't experience any adverse reactions the first day doesn't mean you're certain to be 100% tolerant to the substance. Though allergic reactions to bee pollen are quite rare, they often depend on the dose you're taking. With this in mind, experts recommend increasing your dose by just one granule's worth per day for a month. After this time, you can continue ongoing use, as long as you personally feel confident that you won't experience any adverse effects.

Common Bee Pollen Forms

Bee pollen comes in a few different forms, which is important to note when looking for bee pollen for sale. Although all forms can be beneficial, it's always good to know what to expect when purchasing them.

01

Dried

Dried bee pollen doesn't contain much moisture, which helps it last much longer. Although it's convenient to store, it doesn't provide the same incredible health benefits.

02

Pills or Capsules

Pills or capsules usually contain dried bee pollen and several fillers. While they offer an easy way to consume pollen, they typically don't offer many benefits.

03

Fresh

Fresh bee pollen is the best option, containing helpful nutrients and beneficial properties. If it's on a shelf, it's not fresh—you must refrigerate or freeze fresh bee pollen. Fortunately, it maintains its nutrient levels for up to two years if you don't expose it to moisture.

How Bees Choose Which Pollen to Collect?

Bees choose which pollen to collect based on various factors such as the availability of pollen, the nutritional content of the pollen, and the flower's attractiveness to the bee. Bees rely heavily on visual and olfactory cues to determine which flowers to visit.

Bees are attracted to flowers that are brightly colored and have distinct patterns or markings that make them easy to identify. These flowers usually produce a lot of nectar, which is a source of energy for the bee. Bees can also detect the scent of flowers from a considerable distance. They are especially attracted to flowers with a sweet fragrance, as this indicates that the flower has a high sugar content.

When a bee lands on a flower, it uses its proboscis to suck up nectar and transfers some of the plant's pollen onto its body. As the bee moves from one flower to another, it inadvertently transfers pollen to the new flower, allowing for cross-pollination.

In addition to collecting nectar and pollen, bees also collect propolis, which is a sticky substance that they use to patch up holes in their hives. Propolis is made from tree resins, and some bees will visit specific types of trees to collect the specific resins that they need to make their propolis.

In conclusion, bees choose which pollen to collect based on various factors such as the availability of pollen, the nutritional content of the pollen, and the flower's attractiveness to the bee. Bees rely heavily on visual and olfactory cues to determine which flowers to visit.

The Difference Between Fresh Pollen and Pollen in the Honeycomb

We want to know

How many of you think that fresh bee pollen is gathered from inside the honeycomb, and how many think that it's not?

Truth is

It's not taken from inside the honeycomb! It's actually gathered as the honeybees enter the beehive. This is why we say that the pollen isn't made by the bees, it's simply gathered by them! The pollen is 100% flower pollen, that is transported to the hive by worker honeybees. From there it is gently brushed off the legs of the bee as they enter the hive, collected, and stored. Pollen collected at the entrance of the beehive is Fresh Bee Pollen, straight from the flower.
Honeybees instinctually gather pollen for a variety of reasons: to feed young bees, to save for protein in the winter, and to act as a warm barrier or insulation in the cells around the larvae/brood cells.
As fresh bee pollen is a living product, if the bees were to just store it in the cells and leave it alone, it would quickly mold in the warm beehive. To combat this, the honeybees will mix enzymes and secretions from their bodies with trace amounts of honey and use that to preserve the pollen. This creation is commonly known as "Bee Bread," because you could slice a chunk of this fermented pollen straight from the hive and eat it, just like bread.

How to Store Pollen?

Keep the bee pollen in an airtight container or jar, preferably made of glass. This will help to prevent moisture and preserve the freshness of the pollen.

01/

Store the pollen in a cool, dry, and dark place. Direct sunlight or heat can cause the pollen to spoil quickly.

02/

Label the container with the date of purchase or harvest and the type of pollen. This will help you keep track of the freshness and variety of the pollen.

03/

Avoid storing bee pollen in the refrigerator as it can cause moisture to build up which can affect its quality.

04/

If you have a large amount of pollen, consider freezing it to prolong its shelf life. Place small amounts of pollen in a ziplock bag or airtight container and freeze it for up to a year. Thaw the pollen before consuming.

Q: What triggers pollen allergy?

A: Pollen allergies occur when your immune system mistakenly identifies pollen as a dangerous substance. It's unclear what causes any type of allergy, including a pollen allergy. Experts believe that genetics may play a role.

Q: How is pollen harmful to humans?

A: Pollen exposure can trigger various allergic reactions, including symptoms of hay fever. Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, occurs when allergens like pollen enter your body and your immune system mistakenly identifies them as a threat.

Q: What is pollen slang for?

A: But when we talk about pollen in weed terms, unless we're specifically talking about breeding (see definition above), we're talking about kief. Kief ('pollen' is the trichomes (THC and other terpenes) of the female plant what people also describe as the crystals, white hairs, etc. ( the fuzzy white stuff on buds).

Q: Why do people take pollen?

You may also hear recommendations for using bee pollen for alcoholism, asthma, allergies, health maintenance, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), enlarged prostate, or stomach problems.

Q: Do pollen allergies go away?

A: Seasonal allergies ill last for as long as you are exposed to the allergen, often several weeks at a time. Some people outgrow their seasonal allergies, but some have them for life. What time of day are allergies the worst? Allergies are often worse when pollen counts are highest.

Q: Does honey cure pollen allergies?

A: The idea behind honey treating allergies is similar to that of a person getting allergy shots. But while allergy shots have been proven to be effective, honey hasn't. When a person eats local honey, they are thought to be ingesting local pollen. Over time, a person may become less sensitive to this pollen.

Q: Do you become immune to pollen?

A: The best way to build a tolerance to seasonal allergies is through immunotherapy. Allergy immunotherapy will expose your body to small amounts of what you are allergic to. Over time you will become desensitized and stop reacting when exposed to allergens.

Q: What month is pollen the strongest?

A: March through June is tree pollen season. June, July, and August is usually when the grass pollens are high, sometimes into September in a warm year. August through the end of October is weed pollen season - it takes a hard freeze to kill off the weeds. Some outdoor molds also peak in the fall months.

Q: How long does pollen stay active?

A: Pollen can remain active on clothing for a variable amount of time, depending on factors such as the type of pollen, humidity, and air circulation. In general, pollen can remain active on clothing for several hours to a few days. However, it's important to note that the potency of the pollen may decrease over time.

Q: Do pollen allergies get worse with age?
